Anne Buchko was born on the family farm near Elfros on November 30, 1933. She was the third of six children born to Elizabeth (Mikovitch) and John Buchko. She attended school at Springbumn and at the Sacred Heart Academy in Yorkton. After completing a secretarial course at Saskatoon School of business she moved to Foam Lake. Mom worked at Theo Halyk's I.H.C. and also Olson's Hardware. In Foam Lake, she met the love of her life, Frank Alan West. They were engaged on Feb 14 and married in April 1955. They were blessed with five children, Ronald, Garry, Sandra, Peggy and William (Billy).
Mom was one busy woman with five little ones under the age of 6, as well as the house, yard work, a huge garden and livestock- cattle, pigs and chickens. She was a member of the Bertdale Ladies Aid and was the secretary for the Rural Telephone Co. When the children were older, she got a job as cook at the Western Hotel. She gained many long-lasting friendships with co-workers there.
When we were growing up, mom never had time to be creative, but after we left, she started counting cross stitch projects, completing a picture for all her children, grandchildren and a couple of greats, all of them a treasured keepsake. Her family were her pride and joy. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mom never got to grow old with her best friend (our dad), as he passed away in 1994.
Mom loved to spend time in her yard mowing grass and tending to her flowers, feeding the birds and stray cats. She was very fortunate to be able to remain in her home until her fall and her short Hospital stay. This was made possible later in life when her son, Bill, came back to live with her and care for her. She loved having company, family and friends. After the visit, there was time for a hug, and her favourite goodbye expression was “Toodle-Loo”.
What we will remember most about Mom was her strength, sense of humor, her smile and her love for us will last forever.
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers John and George, sisters Mary and Liz, and all of her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, grandson Cody West and daughter-in-law, Lana (Hood) West.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her children: Garry (Tami), Sandra Barber (Carl), Peggy Chayko (Gerry), William, and Ronald. Grandchildren Christopher & Larisa Barber, Harmonie Roesch-West (Guy) & Kyle Chayko (Melissa), Janessa Claypool (Cody) Joe, Bob & Sarah Kerluke (Blair). Great-Grandchildren Payton and Niya West, Aralynn, Dalan & Brielle Claypool, Charlotte Chayko, Eve Barber, and Elle Kerluke. Her last surviving sister, Agnes Reinhart and many nieces and nephews and their families.
A Celebration of Life for Anne will be held in the Spring of 2026.
