Fred Slowski

March 4, 1920 — April 20, 2016

March 4, 1920 - April 20, 2016

Our amazing father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away at Wadena Hospital on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at the age of 96.
Fred was born on March 4, 1920, to Mike and Annie Slowski. He was raised on the family farm near Sheho, along with his other ten brothers and sisters. He enlisted in the Army during World War II. After release, he lived in several communities, finally settling in Wadena 40 years ago. He retired from Wadena Hospital (Maintenance Department).
The changes that Fred witnessed and in which he participated from his birth to the present are phenomenal: from travel in the village by horse and buggy to travel by jet; from pen-and-paper letters to the computer age. He saw it and did a lot. His ability to learn and adapt to these changes created his uniqueness. Fred's skillful ability to connect and communicate with all the diverse people with whom he interacted was remarkable; he had a very out-going personality and literally "never met a stranger."
Fred enjoyed learning and he appreciated life. He had the amazing gifts of conversation, interacting with others, seeing the best in people, and storytelling. His constant curiosity and his belief in his own ability to affect his world, as well as his creative inventiveness while interacting with that world, kept him youthful in spirit until the end. He had a larger-than-life impact on the many people who knew and loved him. He will be remembered for his big Freddie smile, generosity and warm heart. He will live on in our stories, our hearts, and our big Slowski grins.
Fred was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, George, John, Matt, Bill and Orest; sisters, Mary, Elsie and Iris; Dianne, his loving wife of 62 years; infant daughter Theresa; and son-in-law Bob.
He will always be remembered and missed by those now left behind: his children, Douglas (Heather), Joanne (Jack), Lynda, Beverly (George) and Rick (Tricia); grandchildren, Allison, Aaron, Leanne (Ken), Mark (Clare), Patrick (Laura), Jason (Colleen), Georgie (Kristin), Brendan, Reilly; and great-grandchildren, Maddy, McKenna, Cameron, Neven, Zachary, Carolyn, Jonathon, Audrey, Alex, Mikayla and Teagan. As well, he leaves to mourn his loss his very good friends, Bill and Kathy Price, Henry and Lucy Kolodzjieski, and an extensive group of friends and relatives in the Wadena, Tuffnell, Sheho, Foam Lake and Wynyard communities.
