Grace Evelyn Tryhuba

August 31, 1935 — February 25, 2026

It is with heartfelt sadness that we share the passing of Grace Evelyn Tryhuba of Kuroki, Saskatchewan, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. She was 90 years old.

To know her was to love her. She will remembered for her practical nature, strength, and resilience. Grace only counted blessings and was happiest on the farm. The door was always open for anyone who was passing through and needed a place to stay. Visitors could always count on her famous homemade waffles with strawberries, whip cream, and sausages!

Grace was born August 31, 1935 in Elfros, Saskatchewan, to the late Ragnor and Anna (Olgeirson) Torfason. At the age of 11 Grace moved with her family to Wadena. Grace met her one-and-only Matro (Mat) when she was 15, and they married in November, shortly after her 18th birthday. She then moved to Kuroki, Saskatchewan to the Tryhuba homestead, and ‘the farm’ became her home for more than 70 years.

Grace and Mat were the original up-cyclers, they tore down buildings and structures in neighbouring towns and used the materials to build a home of their own that they later brought their boys home to – two of the greatest joys of her life. In her younger years, Grace loved to curl. She played cards with friends and family until all hours of the night since Liverpool was one of her favourites and it was never known for being a quick card game.

Working until her 80’s, she had an upholstery and sewing business with her dear friend Ruth, together they upholstered furniture, car and tractor seats, made Halloween costumes, wedding and bridesmaids dresses, and more. She knitted many cherished Christmas ‘socks’ and Mickey Mouse sweaters for family, friends, and neighbours. Pajamas, quiet books, and stuffies of all shapes and sizes were standard gifts for the little ones in her life, particularly her two grandchildren whom she adored. She loved to paint, cross-stitch, knit, etc. If Grace could dream it, she would do it.

While she loved the farm, she still managed to travel. A trip to England with her son Jeff, multiple trips to North Carolina (and later Calgary) to visit Tom and the kids, a memorable trip to Iceland with her sister Louise, nephew Grant, and great-nephew Grant Jr. and lots of road trips with her great-niece Michelle including trips to the Olgeirson big yellow house in North Dakota (her mother's birth place). Grace also did roads trips with numerous family members to visit family in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and the United States.

Left with wonderful memories of her amazing life are her son, Tom Tryhuba; her cherished grandchildren, Gage and Dakota Tryhuba; daughter-in-law, Tracy Tryhuba; her sister, Louise Dilling; and many nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and cousins, who will always treasure their memories of time spent on the farm.

Grace was also blessed with the most wonderful friends and neighbours in her cherished community of Kuroki.

Grace was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Matro Tryhuba and their son Jeffrey, siblings Wilmer (Violet) Torfason, Louis Torfason, and Thordis (William) Vellenoweth, brother-in-law Bruce Dilling, and sister-in-law Olga Pawluk.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, May 17 from 1- 3 pm at the Kuroki Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Kuroki Community Hall in her memory.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to her doctors and caregivers, her wonderful neighbours, community members, and friends for their kindness and support. To honour Grace, the family asks friends and loved ones to do something kind for a neighbour or connect with someone in their community.

In her last days, Grace spoke of having had a wonderful life. This Okie from Kuroki is resting easy.
