Gunnlaugur Halldor Fredrick Axford

September 25, 1938 — November 28, 2024

Leslie District

Gunnlaugur Halldor Fredrick Axford, known as “Gunni,” was born on September 25, 1938, in the Mount Helca District, the third of seven children.

He attended Mount Helca School until Grade 8, after which he dedicated himself to farming. Farming was his life—working the fields, seeding, and harvesting.

Gunni loved being with his farm animals, especially his horses. During winter, he would harness them with Scotch collars and bells, giving many family members sleigh rides, which were enjoyed by all.

Watching children play always put a smile on his face. He enjoyed walking behind his nieces and nephews as they learned to walk and picking them up when they stumbled.

Family gatherings and friends dropping in for coffee, gathering around the kitchen table, made his day.

In his younger days, he enjoyed participating in ball tournaments and curling; later, he took part in wagon treks.

He enjoyed almost everything in life—except chickens and snakes (any reptiles), as our niece discovered when she put a gecko on his shoulder.

Gunni was predeceased by his parents, Dori and Jenny Axford; his sisters, Eileen and Eda; his nephew, Arlin; and his brothers-in-law, Tom, Willie, and Joe.

He will be missed and remembered by his brothers, Vernon and Arnold; his sisters, Nellie and Christina; as well as many other relatives and friend.
