In Loving Memory of Irene Grace Schultz
April 15, 1936 – September 22, 2026
Irene Grace Schultz passed away on September 22, 2026, at the age of 90. She was born in Wadena on April 15, 1936, to Max and Martha Schwanke. Irene was the middle child, with an older brother, Ewalt, and a younger brother, Leonard. She completed Grade 8 at Rosa School and attended Grades 9 and 10 at Sturgis Composite High School.
On June 6, 1954, Irene married John Schultz. Together they built a life rooted in faith, family, hard work, and devotion to one another. They were blessed with four children: Garry, Darrell, Karen, and David.
Irene was a strong and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She worked alongside John on the farm, tended a large garden, hauled grain for many years, and always seemed able to fix whatever needed mending, whether it was clothing or equipment. Her greatest joys came from caring for her grandchildren. She welcomed every opportunity to have them stay with her and John in the summer, and she was always willing to travel to the city to help when their parents were away or at work. She especially cherished living close to Kaitlin and Logan and being available at a moment’s notice whenever she was needed.
Her family will remember summers filled with fresh garden produce, pea-shelling days, hilling potatoes, canning fruit, homemade bread and head cheese, and the warmth of good food made with a mother’s loving touch. Irene was known for her baking and for keeping each grandchild’s favourite treats on hand. She also made countless perogies, cabbage rolls, afghans, dishcloths, potholders, toques, mitts, and slippers—each one treasured by those who received them.
Irene enjoyed quilting with neighbours, tending her flowers, visiting with friends and family, and taking part in the everyday work and joys of rural life. In 1986, Irene and John built a house in town and began a new chapter. With a smaller garden, Irene had more time to grow flowers, knit, crochet, and go for coffee with neighbours.
In July 2024, Irene moved into the Weneeda Park Lodge and became an active participant in all of the activities.
Over the years, Irene witnessed many changes, from running water and power coming to the farm to the arrival of telephones and cellphones, yet she remained grounded in the values of faith, family, hard work, and kindness.
Through every season of life, Irene remained devoted to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, service, and quiet care that will continue to live on in all who knew her.
Irene was predeceased by her parents, Max and Martha Schwanke; her husband, John Schultz; brother Ewalt Schwanke; and other loved ones who went before her.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Garry (Karen) Schultz, Darrell (Audrey) Schultz, Karen (Jeff) Mazurkewich, and David (June) Schultz; grandchildren Nick (Karlie), Michelle (Craig), Kaitlin, Logan (Kea), Travis (Morgan), Chad (Kelsey), Matt (Katie), and Adam; and great-grandchildren Callie, Payton, Kellan, Presley, Declan, and Brielle.
Irene is also survived by her brother Leonard (Marguerite) Schwanke; sister-in-law Linda (Arlin) Ryan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
