Obituary for Mom

We lovingly remember Leona Cornelia Scherbatiuk (79) who passed away peacefully at St.Elizabeth’s ,Hospital in Humboldt,Sask  On Thursday July 27,2017.

Leona was born on July 23,1938 in Moose Jaw, Sask to Juliusand Stephanie Radwanski. She was one of 4 children, raised in the house on Couteau Street.

She became a secretary for the government of Saskatchewan in 1955 till she married Dad.  Dad had put a personal ad in the western producer and Mom answered it.  Well, they started writing letters to each other and decided to meet in person on August 18,1973 at Dwayne and Marylin Kapeluk’s wedding.  Love blossomed and they were married the following year on June 22, 1974.

Mom once said that she was a city girl going to the country.  She said that she found this rather hard when she first got married but had an amazing friend, Katie Bobryk, who helped her overcome this and enjoy being a farm wife.

Not long after came a beautiful daughter, Stefanie Marie, she was born on December 13, 1975. It was June 11, 1976 when they moved onto the home farm east of Hendon.  We have fond memories of the farm.  In 1978 came their second daughter, Katrina Joy, who was born August 2, now their family was complete.

Dad and mom were small farmers of a mixed farm, including wheat, canola, pigs, cows and of course chickens.  We also enjoyed wild saskatoons and a bountiful garden harvest every year.  Mom loved the garden and canning.  Even when they moved into town mom did this till she left Wadena to move into the villa to live in Humboldt.

Mom was a devoted Christian since 1989.  She would pray with anyone who called on her.  Numerous times we would call her just for that.  She was a stern, but loving mother who taught her kids a lot about love, God and Ukrainian food.  She loved baking and would always provide goodies for different functions going on.

Mom had a huge laugh and a big heart.  Stefanie and Katrina are better women because of those two things alone.  You were always welcome at mom and dad’s house.  Coffee and tea were always great and goodies too…

The most important people in her life was her devoted husband, Iner, and her daughters, Stefanie and Katrina, along with their hubbies and kids.  She had five beautiful grandkids who will miss her dearly.

Dad and mom moved into Wadena in April of 2005.  There became Mom’s last real home.  She enjoyed having friends here and family could stay whenever.

Mom entered long term care in March of this year in Humboldt, Sask, as Dad could no longer look after mom.  While there, she had many visitors.  She said only in June that this was her home.  The staff were great there.  Always compassionate and concerned.

Leona was predeceased by Julius, her father(1972) and her mother, Stephanie,(2015).

She leaves to mourn her husband, Iner, her two daughters, Stefanie(Caleb)Head, Katrina(Ryan)Buydens; grandchildren:Joisah, Nathan and Janaya Head(Stefanie), Katrina’s children, Jordan and Logan. Sister; Gloria Stushnoff, Brother’s; Mike and Ed Radwanski and numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew her but always in our hearts.  See you later mom.
