Obituary
Lloyd Kosmachuk of Wadena, SK, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, at the age of 87. Lloyd was born on May 17, 1938, on Anne and Wasyl Hyrcak’s farm near Kuroki. He was the first child born to Wasyl and Vonda (Hrycak) Kosmachuk in Canada after they immigrated from Ukraine in 1937. Lloyd’s name at birth was Slowko, but when he attended school in Kylemore, the kids made fun of him, so his teacher at that time named him Lloyd. He started farming at the age of 15, quitting school so that his parents could acquire some land. At that time, farming with a horse and plow was going by the wayside, and they managed to acquire a tractor that Lloyd then used to farm their land. In 1955, he ventured east to Toronto to work, where his brothers lived and worked. He soon grew tired of the bustle of the city, bought a truck, and drove back home to Saskatchewan.
Lloyd lived in a boarding house in Wadena upon his return and met his love, Doris, who was a young teacher also living there. They were married on July 7, 1962, and moved out to the home quarter east of Kylemore, where Lloyd continued farming while Doris taught in the area. Their family began with their first child, Doreen, born in 1963, and then, soon after, Maxine in 1964. Doris was still teaching at the time, so Lloyd looked after the two little ones during the day. After living in Foam Lake for one year and then moving back to Kylemore, they moved to Wadena in 1967. Cameron was born in 1968 and Angelin in 1972, completing their family.
Lloyd opened a welding shop in 1967, and in 1971, his creative vision was fulfilled as he started a new venture with Lloyd’s Manufacturing Ltd., producing his self-designed and patented PTO-drive irrigation pumps. With his business, he travelled across Canada, the United States, and even to Australia. He farmed and ran a business at the same time for many years.
In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time outdoors. He had a green thumb and loved tending to his shop window geraniums. He enjoyed socializing and playing crib with friends. As well, he had an ear for music and played the banjo, the organ, and the accordion.
In the late nineties, Lloyd retired from his business and slowed down farming, eventually retiring from the field in the early 2000s. Even though he was no longer in the field and instead rented the land to his neighbours, he always took an interest in hearing how the crops were doing. He enjoyed crop checking and usually making his way to the lake for visits with family. In later years, Lloyd enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine and watching the birds that he kept well fed in their backyard. He loved and took pride in his children and grandchildren, enjoying visits from them at any time. When living at home became difficult, he joined the family of Pleasant View Care Home in April 2025, keeping the nurses, care aides, and other residents entertained with his jokes and stories until he fell ill and passed away peacefully in the Wadena Hospital on the morning of January 1.
Lloyd is survived by his loving wife, Doris; his children, Doreen (Brian) Grover, Maxine Athene, Cameron (Tammi) Kosmachuk, and Angelin (Graham) Comfort; grandchildren, Pamela (Jason) Turner, Nolan (Jennifer) Stroshein, Jason (Jen) Matheson, Julie (Ian) Goeres, Aiden (Jessica) Stroshein, Justin and Tia Kosmachuk, Garet and Kira Comfort; as well as nine great-grandchildren. Lloyd also leaves his siblings, Walter, Tony, Andy, Dena, and Vera, and is predeceased by his parents, Wasyl and Vonda, and his brother Sam.
