Mary was born in Milna, Ukraine on August 4, 1928 to Dmetro and Maria Petryk. Her parents and family came to Canada in 1929, when Mary was 9 months old (with her sister, Rosie and brother, Peter). They came first to the Port of Quebec. Then they took the train west to settle in Okla, SK. They lived in a sod house where her brother Ben was born. The house filled with lots of water so then they moved in with sister Rosie and her new husband Alec Olszewski. This is where twin brothers Mike and Paul were born, but Paul only lived a few months. They then found a place to buy near Okla.
Mary took her schooling at Turnout school, where she learned to speak and read English. As a young woman Mary found jobs waitressing, housekeeping and being a nanny.
In 1950, Mary married Karl Stein from Strasbourg, SK. They first settled near Okla. Then near Hazel Dell. They raised 12 children, and have lived on the current homestead Southwest of Hazel Dell since 1961.
Mary loved gardening and growing food to feed her large family. Her favourite thing was picking eggs and feeding her chickens. Milking cows and calving time were other favourite times for her. Mary liked her quiet times and times in nature. She loved to be out in the woods, and when we were young she liked to go hunting prairie chickens and ducks.
Mary loved having her family home for big gatherings. She enjoyed listening to the stories that everyone told at the kitchen table, and also reminiscing and telling everyone about the good old days.
Mary had the best work ethic. She worked tirelessly to cut and stook loose hay. Then when we bought a square baler, she baled and hauled square bales along with Dad, She repaired fencing, made round bales, and also did the field work. Mary kept doing what she could right up until a couple weeks ago when she went into the Wadena hospital where she passed away on Apr. 8, 2025.
Mary is predeceased by her husband Karl, her parents, Dmytro and Maria Petryk, her brothers and sister and their spouses Rosie (Alec) Olszewski, Peter (Nellie) Petryk, Ben (Eileen) Petryk, Mike (Joyce) Petryk and Paul (in infancy), her grandson, Kurtis Horkoff her daughter Adeline Horkoff, and her sons-in-law, Jim Trohak and Timothy Way.
