Michael Luciuk

October 21, 1963 — June 5, 2023

Michael Robert Luciuk was born in Lestock, SK on October 21st, 1963 to Walter and Judy Luciuk.  According to Judy, he was a cute, chubby cheeked little boy who was always happy.

Michael was raised on the farm and attended school in Wishart. At the age of 8, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This was the first of many challenges Michael had to overcome.

Michael participated in 4-H, Ukrainian Dance, football, curling and basketball. In his teenage years, he was very popular with the girls. Back in the day, he was a heart throb. Michael graduated high school in 1982.

On September 30, 1982, at the age of 18, Michael was involved in a car accident where he sustained a serious head injury.  He spent 7 days in a coma, and 6 weeks in the hospital. His head injury was life changing for Michael and his family.  He had to re-learn everything including talking and walking. Michael made a remarkable recovery, but the deficits he was left with made his life difficult. Despite this, he was determined to make his own living and keep his independence.

Throughout his adult years, Michael worked various jobs; on the rigs, as a mechanic, construction worker and janitor.  On his days off work, Michael would come back home to the farm and help in the field or with yard work.  He was very particular about the yard and didn’t quit until it looked perfect! As he got older and his eye sight began to fail, he was unable to remain in the work force. He also had to give up his driver’s licence.  These losses were hard for Michael to accept.

Michael had many good qualities.  He would play and tease his niece and nephew’s.  He was very patient and kind to them.  He also loved dogs, none as much as his dog Red.  He liked vintage cars and motor cycles. At one time he owned a 1979 Cadillac and a Harley Davidson motorbike.

Michael had a good heart.  Even when he was down to his last dollar, he would offer it to someone who he felt needed it more than him.  He struggled in social settings, disliked large gatherings and even admitted that he worked very hard at being appropriate in these settings. In recent years, he’d politely decline a Christmas invitation and chose to stay at home where he was most content.  He was always appreciative of any help offered to him.

Michael was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Judy Luciuk and Grandparents Zenko and Likora Luciuk and John and Polly Melnychuk. He was also predeceased by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is survived by his siblings; Anthony (Cindy), Myrna (Kevin) Woyewoda, Steven (Crystal) and Leann. Nephews and niece:  Matthew (Darnell) Luciuk, Ryan (Leah) Luciuk, Jordan Woyewoda (Shae), Lee Woyewoda, Adrian Woyewoda and Lauren Luciuk (Ryley) and great niece Vanya Luciuk.  Michael is also remembered by his Aunt Helen Gyorfi and numerous cousins.

Michael will be greatly missed by all.
