Nickolas (Nick) Henry Schmitz was born in Humboldt, SK on April 22, 1933 to Nickolas Sr. (who passed away unexpectedly in November 1932, before Nick’s birth) and Agnes (nee Koenig) Schmitz.
Nick attended Greenside Country School, north of Englefeld, for his early education and then went to Englefeld School. Due to his mother’s passing in February 1938, when Nick was a young boy, he was raised by his uncle Henry and aunt Louise (nee Koenig) Nieman.
Nick worked at various jobs including Ocean Falls Pulp and Paper Mill in Ocean Falls, BC before buying land south of Quill Lake, SK in 1965. This started his lifelong love of farming.
Nick married the love of his life Sophie (Odelien) Hufnagel on December 16, 1977 in Quill Lake, SK. When he married Sophie, he also gained her family who were a very important part of his life. Anyone who knew Nick and Sophie knew their devotion for each other was unwavering. You could often find them working together on the farm, but they also took time to attend dances and socialize. Nick’s life forever changed on January 19, 2006 when Sophie passed away.
Nick was an avid curler and had a few trophies to prove it. He had a great passion for animals, and you could often find him in the corral with the horses and his dog, Dakota, was by his side.
Nick was not a social butterfly but certainly loved company and there was always time for “just one more”. He enjoyed the local corner store and you could find him having a rum and wings and you would always have a great visit with him.
Due to failing health Nick moved into Quill Lake, SK in 2016 and on April 11, 2018 he became a resident of the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson, SK. Nick’s older brother, Don, from Cranbrook, BC made many trips out to visit Nick. Nick looked forward to each and every visit. Nick will forever be remembered by the staff of QPCL for his smile and the twinkle in his eyes.
Nick passed away peacefully, with friends by his side, on October 29, 2019.
Nick leaves to mourn his passing his brother Don Smith of Cranbrook, BC; sisters-in-law Mary Schmitz Lefebvre of Humboldt, SK and Elaine Smith of Vernon, BC; step daughter Bernice Sobchyshyn of Humboldt, SK; Sophie’s family Jean (Lorne) Hufnagel and Gerald (Adeline) Samborski; Sophie’s grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Sophie Schmitz; parents Nickolas Sr. and Agnes Schmitz; brothers Leonard, Clarence and Norbert (Ellen) Schmitz and Vincent Smith; sisters Bernice (Bill) Smith and Genevieve (Clarence) Schulte; sister-in-law Beverly Smith; Sophie’s family Lorne Hufnagel, Phyllis (Cliff) Foster, Adeline Samborski and Ernie Sobchyshyn and her siblings Olaf, Edwin, Margaret, Annie, Bertha and Marie.
