After leaving school, Sam worked with his father in the bush and farmed then went to work in Saskatoon. Shortly after, he joined the CN Extra Gang.
On October 20, 1972, he married Dianne Negraeff of Canora, and decided to make farming his life’s work. To this union four children were born: Milton, Miles, Lavern and Thomas.
In 2008, he began his career as a mechanic at LD Allen Enterprises at Creelman, Saskatchewan. Two years later Dianne moved there to be with him. He continued to work until he became ill. On August 14, 2017, Sam entered the Estevan hospital and passed away on September 14, 2017.
