Walter was born on October 14th, 1929 on the family farm, to Nick and Irene Dvernichuk (nee Polonich) and was one of nine children.  He lost his mother at a very early age, so the older siblings played a huge role in raising the younger ones.

His love of the land drew him to farming, first with his father and then on his own.  On October 25th, 1958, he married the love of his life, Irene (nee Lazorko).  Together they raised five children.

His strength and determination served him well and helped him through some very difficult years, both on the farm and with his health.  In fact, to quote Walter, “It was the love of my wife, by my side that gave me the strength to win my numerous health battles”.

It was important to him to serve his community and his church.  Walter served as Director of the Co-op in West Bend and Foam Lake, the Foam Lake Credit Union and the West Bend Pool Committee.  He also took great pride in serving as Secretary/Treasurer of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church of Edmore for over 30 years.

Walter’s four grandchildren brought him much joy and he was a strong role model, playing an active role in their lives throughout the years.  Whenever they were around, you could definitely see the twinkle in his eye.

He loved the farm.  It was where he always wanted to be.  He began each day with a ride on the golf cart, surveying the land with Cocoa (the dog), by his side.  Then he would turn on the radio, sit in his swing and enjoy being at home.  He was blessed to do all of this his last day with us.  We are grateful.

He will forever be remembered by his loving wife Irene; his children Karen, Yvonne (Colin), Lisa (Kelvin) and their sons Derek, Dakota (Richelle), Darren (Tricia) and their daughters Kara and Kaitlin.

Walter was predeceased by his parents Nicolai and Irene Dvernichuk, his wife’s parents Fred and Annie Lazorko and by his six brothers and two sisters and numerous brother and sisters-in-law and his son Miles.
