In Loving Memory of

Agnes Schultz

No funeral service will be held due to Covid-19. A private service will be held at a later date.

Agnes Schultz (nee Slusarchuk) left this world on January 9, 2022 at the Wadena Hospital, just 16 days before her 106th birthday. She arrived in Canada in 1925 via a long, horrible ship and train voyage. Her mother, father and two younger sisters got off the train in Lintlaw, SK to start a new life. This was accomplished by hard, manual toil, carving out a meager life on their new homestead. Agnes’s father, Harry, passed away at a young age of 48 from a simple ruptured appendix – a minor operation of today. This left young Agnes and her mother Steffie to take over running the family farm southwest of Lintlaw. Agnes was the oldest of the siblings which had now added a brother and a sister: Agnes, Pauline, Anne, John and Phyllis.

Agnes met her husband-to-be Ernest after a short horseback ride courtship. They were married on November 4, 1936, a very blustery, cold day. Their honeymoon was spent at their log house on the new farm, with a new husband and a new last name, Schultz.

With a little help from her mom Steffie, who gave them some cows, and from Ernest’s dad Walter, who gave them some land, the young couple began to carve out the land from bush, sloughs, and mosquitoes. A great farm they grew and thrived on. Agnes and Ernest worked tirelessly hand in hand. Agnes loved her cows and took care of all the milking along with many other chores. She would pitch in with stooking and hauling hay by rack, and later as square bales. Agnes was not afraid of hard work and would help with any task needing to be done. She worked as hard as any man and was well known in the neighborhood as a wonderful cook. Having a large dining room in her new farmhouse, Agnes would always graciously host the large family celebrations at her place. Starving in her old country was never forgotten.

In 1975, Agnes and Ernest retired from farming and built a new house in Wadena, SK. Agnes had a large garden with rich soil which was trucked in some 20 miles from the farm. She would seed 120 potato and about 50 tomato plants, just as an example of how large the garden was. She gave away most of her garden – this was her labor of love. Ernest passed away on October 15, 2014, at the age of 100. They spent nearly 78 years together. “What a wonderful life.”

Agnes leaves to celebrate her great, long life: daughter Phyllis (Daryl) Doyle; son Doney (Elly) Schultz; brother-in-law Willie Schultz; grandchildren Tammy Schultz, Dr. Kevin (Valerie) Doyle, Jason (Heidi) Doyle and Shayne Schultz; great grandchildren Ryan, Samantha, Liam, Morgan and Charlotte Doyle and Jacob and Jordan Schultz as well as several nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to the Wadena Hospital staff, Wadena Home Care ladies and Tompkins Funeral Home. A special thank you to Agnes’s neighbor Lynda and her niece Sharon. Bless you all, Phyllis and Doney.
