Andrew “Andy” Scherbatiuk was born in Ukraine on March 25, 1931 to Stephan and Melania Scherbatiuk who farmed in the town of Kochanovka until they immigrated to Canada in October 1938 with their three sons Tony, Andy and Iner via the White Line Steamship. Once in Canada they travelled by CN train to Kuroki. After settling in the Wadena District three more children were born: Alex, Bill and Anne.

Andy spent most of his childhood years growing up on the Golden Grain Farm in the Rosebud District that his parents purchased in 1943 from the author of children’s stories Thornton W. Burgess. He attended the country schools of Willow Glen #1, Westport and Sunderland #1.

He loved music, especially singing. He learned to play the fiddle at the age of 13. Years later Andy and his brother Tony formed the band “Embassy Playboys” complete with posters. They performed at weddings and social dances.

Andy met Olga Hrycak in 1960 and courted her for two years before they were married on November 17, 1962. They lived on the Hrycak farm until they purchased their own farm north of Kuroki. In July 1969 their only child, Shari, was born.

Aside from farming, Andy worked as a carpenter and helped build houses in both Kuroki and Wadena. During the early 1970’s he also worked for the RM of Sasman as a grass cutter maintaining country roads.

Andy loved the farming life and enjoyed going for drives to look at the crops. He farmed until he was 77 years old. After retiring, he went on what he referred to as a trip of a lifetime to Ukraine with his siblings Iner and Anne in 2012. There he was reunited with family in the “old country” and revisited the house in which he was born.

He will be remembered for his positive attitude towards life, his quick wit and his very generous nature. He could talk to anyone and leave a lasting impression.

Andy passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 28.

He will be sadly missed by his daughter Shari (Derek), his grandchildren Brooklyn (Evan) and Jordan. Also be greatly missed by his siblings Iner, Bill and Anne.
