Edith Margaret McCowan was born on April 11,1933 to Margaret (Govan) and Fred McCowan, the youngest in a family of six girls.  The family lived in the Foster house, on the south side of the railway tracks, in Quill Lake.  Edith was a quiet girl who preferred being at home to anywhere else. She enjoyed scrapbooking, her dolls and various sports like skating as a child.   Edith left school at age 16 and began working for the Quill Lake Rural Telephone Company for Mr. Alan Haggard and Mr. Jim Haggard.  She worked there for 11 years, and then moved to the Quill Lake Credit Union from December, 1960 until November, 1975.  After leaving that position, Edith began managing the Shindelka Insurance Agency, where she worked until she retired in 1982.

In her leisure time, Edith loved walking, skating, bowling, crocheting, and playing cards. She also taught herself to play the organ as an adult.  Edith was an avid traveller; she and her travelling companions, sister, Hazel and friend, Phyllis Welsh, travelled to Scotland, Ireland, England, Japan, and Hong Kong.  They also travelled all over the United States, including an Alaskan cruise and a trip to Las Vegas,  and toured many areas of Canada, including the Maritimes.

After her retirement, she cared for her mother until Mrs. McCowan passed away in April of 2002.

After her mother’s passing, Edith kept busy with her sisters, friends, and her special friend, Hector Berard, playing cards, going out for meals, and occasionally, going dancing.  She was a very involved aunt, and liked keeping up with all her nieces and nephews and their families.  She was so proud of all of them and thought they could do no wrong.

Edith remained very active and independent up until January of 2016, when her health began to fail.  She moved into the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson shortly after.  Edith involved herself in all the activities the Lodge had to offer and was appreciated by staff for her bright smile and positive attitude.

Edith died peacefully on April 26, 2020.  She was predeceased by her parents; her sisters Lillian, Helen, Hazel, and Leona; her four brothers-in-law; and three nephews and one nephew-in-law.  She is survived by her sister, Irene Graham; 10 nieces and nephews and their families; and many friends.

Edith was a strong, independent woman who was ahead of her time in so many ways.  She  is dearly missed.
