In Loving Memory of

Freda McConnell

A celebration of Freda’s life will be held at a later date.

Donations in Freda's memory may be made to the Quill Lake Fire Department and First Responders.

Freda was born on October 21,1923 to David and Maria Zieg in a refugee camp in Germany. From there, with the sponsorship of the Lutheran Church, they immigrated to the German community of Spring Valley, Saskatchewan where she grew up alongside her sister and five brothers. Losing her mother at the age of 7, and facing the challenges of the 1930’s, resulted in Freda’s strength and resilience.

In her early adult years Freda worked at various jobs until deciding to train as a nurse’s aid. Upon completion of her training she came to Quill Lake to work in the hospital and, while living in Quill Lake, met her husband Daniel McConnell. They were married on October 25, 1950 and raised four children while farming in the Selkirk district. Freda took on an active role on the farm, from tending a huge garden to milking cows and raising geese, chickens, turkeys and ducks. For several years Danny and Freda would host Danny’s sister, Kathleen, and her children during the summer months, which meant lots of extra fun and activity around the farm. In 1985 they retired into Quill Lake where Freda had more opportunity to pursue her hobbies which included quilting, knitting MANY afghans, gardening, playing cards and going on casino trips and bingo excursions. She always cherished her time with family and many hours were spent playing cards and enjoying meals together.

After Danny’s passing in 2003, Freda continued to live on her own into her 90th year. She then moved to assisted living in Leroy where she resided until January of this year, when she was hospitalized for a time. Following her hospitalization, Freda moved to Watson Lodge where she stayed until her passing. She will be greatly missed by her surviving children Betty (Allan), Allan (Leanne) and Shirley (Terry), her 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Freda was predeceased by her husband Danny, her son Greg, her parents and siblings.
