Wynyard Legion Hall

Wynyard, SK

Helen Craig was known to many of you through her years of teaching in both Kandahar and Wynyard. You may also have known her from her years of service to the Wynyard Legion. While she may have sent you to the principal’s office or beaten you at curling or softball, there is no doubt about it, she was a great woman.

Helen passed away peacefully on Friday, August 16, 2019 in Wynyard, the way she lived ‑ with her family and friends at the top of her mind. And lipstick in her purse.

Helen was born October 4, 1924 on the family farm near Lestock, Saskatchewan. The eldest of four, Helen was the leader of the pack for her sister Evelyn, brothers Mickey and Alfred and all the many cousins that were always around.

Intent on being a teacher, Helen went to teacher’s college and then set off to Calderbank to student teach. Little did she know that she would meet the love of her life, Alvin. They were married on a dreadfully cold December 4, 1946.

Helen and Alvin moved to just south of Kandahar to build their farm, raise their family and become a fabric of the community. Ken and Mick arrived, and they became a family. While Alvin worked the fields, Helen taught and, together, they raised their boys with examples of good public service and tireless work, lots of laughs and unlimited love.

The greatest joy of Helen’s life was her family and friends. She was the glue that held the family together and was the biggest fan for her boys attending every baseball, hockey and football game they played.

In addition to being a huge fan, Helen herself was a talented sportswoman. She was a fantastic softball player, curler and, with Alvin, became a champion bowler.

During the summers early in her career, Helen accomplished what few women in her day did – attended university. Every Sunday she would take the bus to Saskatoon, work tirelessly at her schoolwork and then take the bus home on Friday to cook, clean and get everything in order for her boys for her to do it all over again the next week.

She couldn’t be prouder of them or the women they married; or more thrilled when the family of four became six and then eight with the addition of her granddaughters and then a great granddaughter. She was a fierce defender of her family and a staunch supporter of her friends.

Helen Craig was a life-long example of tenacious spirit, unlimited energy and love unbounding.

Because of this she will be missed immensely but all are grateful that she is now with her Alvin and her Mick; likely getting someone to play canasta with her.

Helen is survived by her son and his wife Ken and Lynn Craig of Stonewall, MB, daughter-in-law Nancie Craig of Airdrie, AB, grandchildren Stephanie Craig of Washington, D.C. and Jennie and Mike Campbell of Airdrie, AB and great granddaughter Lillie Campbell as well as her brother Mickey Tereposky, brother and sister-in-law Alfred and Mary Tereposky and sister Evelyn Gill along with her nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Please join us in celebrating her life Saturday, October 12 at 1 p.m. at the Wynyard Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wynyard Legion so her support for Canada’s servicemembers can continue to be felt.
