Lucien Guilbault was born on April 27, 1921 to Edgar and Gabrielle Guilbault in Fannystelle, MB. In 1921, the family moved west to Wadena, SK then Kelvington, SK to start a new life. They purchased a property in Kelvington, built a house and a shop and proceeded to have nine more children. Times were poor so they made a garden, Gabrielle taught piano lessons, and Edgar repaired and built a wide variety of things in the shop.

Lucien went on to achieve grade eight in school, which was quite standard at the time. He worked in the shop with his dad and was a fast learner and also became quite diverse. He read many books about electricity and steam and mechanics. He had an amazing ability to understand and retain what he read. This continued for a few years and then he went to work at the Creamery. This was one of the things he did that he talked about the most in later years.

World War II came along, and Lucien joined up in 1941, serving until 1946. He became an airplane engine mechanic and excelled at that until 1946. He was often called upon to assist other mechanics in troubleshooting problems. After the war, he ended up back in the shop with his dad and worked with several of his brothers for a few years under their dad. Lucien’s dad was a bit of a crusty boss and Lucien ended up being the only son that stayed. As his dad became more blind and deaf, he worked more on his own. He went on to install furnaces, rewind and repair electric motors, machining, welding, wiring buildings, etc.

In 1958, Lucien married Dorothy Muir and they went on to have three children: Gisele, Sinda, and Marcel. He continued to work in the shop and on service calls, and Dorothy worked in the post office and grew a large garden. He continued repairing things well into his seventies, then continued to work on his own ambitions into his nineties.

He always enjoyed his grandchildren. Unfortunately, he spent his last year and a half in long term care. He was very determined to make his 100th birthday and lived for 7 days beyond that. He passed away peacefully on May 4, 2021.

Lucien was predeceased by his mother Gabrielle, his father Edgar, and six brothers: Henry, Max, Rene, Nicholas, Ovide, and Fernand. He leaves to mourn his wife, Dorothy; two sisters: Yvonne (Walter) Schalme and Imelda (Fred) Possberg; one brother Adolph (Carol) Guilbault; three children: Gisele (John) Stoik, Sinda Shaw and Marcel (Sheila) Guilbault; seven grandchildren: Cara, Casey, Jesse (Dani), Brendan, Adrianna, Justina and Karina and two great grandchildren: Trayce and Arthur.
