It is with great sadness that the family of Metro Shemela announce his passing on February 16, 2022 at the age of 78.

He is predeceased by is parents Michael Shemela in 1981, his beloved mother Annie Shemela in 2018 and his brother-in-law Peter Martyniuk in 2009.

He leaves behind to celebrate his life, his dear sister Verna Martyniuk, niece Barbara-Ann Dwyer (Ken Dwyer), nephew Bradley Martyniuk (Nadine Martyniuk), niece Michelle Tindall (David Tindall), great-nephew Cohen Martyniuk and great-niece Kyla Tindall as well as many cousins and friends.

Metro grew up on the farm in the rural Saskatchewan village of Fosston.  His early working years saw him silver mining in BC and Saskatchewan but his real passion was farming.  He returned to Fosston to help his Dad and Mom work the family farm in the RM of Ponass Lake.  After his Dad passed away in 1981, he took over the farm and, with the help of his Mom, worked the fields and looked after the cattle and other farm animals.

In August 2012, Metro left the farm for the big city of Wadena after his Mom moved to the Pleasant View Care Home.  He spent his days visiting his Mom and spreading cheer amongst the many other residents.  After his Mom passed away in November 2018, Metro’s health began to fail.  November 2019 saw Metro return to Pleasant View Care Home as a resident.  He spent his time visiting with residents and many friends, playing cards, bingo and enjoying church service.

His greatest pleasures were the video chats and phone calls from his two nieces and nephew and especially his daily phone calls with his sister Verna.

Metro was a simple man and took comfort in the simple pleasures in life.  Anyone who knew Metro was touched by his kindness, amazing laugh and mild temperament.

God chose to take him early as he had special plans for him – farming the fields of heaven.

A special thank you to all of the nurses and care workers at Pleasant View Care Home for taking such good care of Metro.  You were with him to the end.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
