Mike passed away peacefully on October 10, 2019 after a long and full life.

Mike was born to Cyril and Maria Hlady on the family farm in the R.M. of Big Quill on April 13, 1921. He attended Round Hills School but left early to help on the farm. He proudly served in the Army from 1941 until he was discharged after the end of World War II.

Upon his return from the Army and while continuing to work on the farm, he attended a community pie social and bought the new teacher’s pie. After a short courtship, he and Stella Dobko were married on August 29, 1948 and settled on part of the original Hlady homestead.

In the years that followed, in addition to raising their family of nine children and continuing to farm, Mike also worked full time as a carpenter for a local contractor. His passion for working with wood led to him acquiring his Journeyman’s Carpentry License at the age of 54. He then embarked on a successful cabinetry business that he worked on for many years. In 1995, Mike and Stella retired and moved to Wynyard where they made their home until he moved to Golden Acres.

Mike’s life centered around his family, his friends and his faith. His family’s safety and well being were always uppermost in his mind and he was always keenly aware of anything going on in the world which would affect them in any way. Nothing made him happier than to spend time with his family whether it was to share a meal, a card game or his latest project. His children will always cherish the handcrafted pieces he made for them. He treasured the happiness he found in watching things grow, attending the Craven jamborees or casino trips and the thrill of competition he found in horseshoe and bowling tournaments. He found comfort in shared experiences with his coffee crowd and fellow Legion members. Mike showed his faith not only with daily prayers, church attendance and Ukrainian traditions but also by assisting in the upkeep of Krasne church and his love of the land and people placed in his care.

Mike has joined our Father and has been reunited with his wife of 65 years, Stella, and their daughter Bernadette. He was also predeceased by his parents Cyril and Maria, Stella’s parents Alexander and Katherine, his brothers Bill, Matthew and Peter and sisters Anne, Sonia, Jean and Olga.

Left to remember and celebrate Mike’s life are his children Pat (Tuck) Bonertz, Marj, Marv (Marl Fox), Randy (Pat), Gerald (Carolyn), Lauralee (Bob) Irwin, Michelle and Tammy (Tony) Gallagher as well as his grandchildren Andrea (Aaron), Yvonne (Sylvain), Wade (Miranda), Kyle, Lauren, Allison, Tim, Stephania and Alexander and great grandchildren Luke, Grace, Wade Jr. and Johny. He will also be missed by brothers Walter (Vicky) and Russell (Marcella), sisters Helena and Marcia, brothers-in-law Steve (Sandra) and Orest (Val), sisters-in-law Rose and Iris (John), together with his large extended family and the many people whose lives he touched.

The family would like to thank the Golden Acres staff and doctors, especially Mark, for their care and kindness while he was in their care.
