Mrs. Pauline Ekstrom

September 14, 1923 — September 28, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Pauline, or Polly as everyone called her at the Pleasant View Care Home on September 28th, 2022.  Polly was born on September 14, 1923 on a homestead just north of Kylemore, Saskatchewan.  She was the second youngest child of 4 brothers, respectively:  Paul Salikin, Fred (Agnes) Salikin, Bill (Mary) Salikin, and Mike (Irene) Salikin who are all pre-deceased.  Marge Salikin, wife of Paul Salikin lives in and around Edmonton, Alberta.   Polly is pre-deceased by her husband Carl Albert Ekstrom and her son Tyrone Ekstrom.

Polly attended school in Kuroki and as a young woman she worked at various jobs around Pelly Saskatchewan.

On November 25th, 1949 Polly married Carl Albert Ekstrom and had 4 children.  Sheldon and Adele were raised on the farm just east of Kuroki, Arvid and Ester Ekstrom’s homestead.  Tyrone was born in Wadena and spent his first year in Wadena while we stayed with Anne Salikin (Polly’s mom), we called her Boba.  Carl Albert worked up north on dams and such to raise money to buy a place of their own in Kuroki during this time.  The family moved to Kuroki in 1958 and Shane was born in 1961 and raised in Kuroki.

Polly loved to visit and loved to have people over always offering coffee and whatever snacks she had on hand.  She loved to bake and made bread every weekend.  She especially loved her sweets.  She liked to play cards at the Drop Inn Center in Kuroki.  Her favourite pass time was to crochet and she made socks and blankets for everyone and anyone that came to visit.  Polly was a huge card writer and would send cards for any occasion.  She especially loved gardening and growing flowers.  She loved to give her produce to anyone that wanted or needed it and every fall would make an abundance of preserves.  In the winter she liked to go down to the curling rink with her crocheting and visit and watch curling.  Polly would always invite Dad’s brothers and his sister for Christmas so they would not be alone.  Polly would be remembered not only for her kindness and generosity but also for her infectious, boisterous laugh.  Polly loved to spend time with her friends, neighbours and her beloved family.

Polly tragically lost her husband Carl Albert on December 26, 2006 and then she lost her son Tyrone on April 13, 2007.  After that, in May of 2007, she moved into Pleasant View Care home and has been there ever since.

Polly is dearly loved and will always be remembered by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren:  Sheldon (Carolyn) Ekstrom (Shelley & Lee Brandstetter, Will and Benn), (Adriann & Angela Ekstrom, Austin and Elizabeth), (Cameron (Kay) Ekstrom, Madison and Nolan); Adele (Joe) Guiotto (Stefano, Julius & Paolo & Celeste Guiotto, Ezra and Amelia); Shane (Cindy) Ekstrom (Brendan & Kirsten, Ryker, Skylar & Elijah) and Kyle Ekstrom (Sofia).  Polly will also be loved and remembered by her many nieces, nephews, friends, caregivers and neighbours.
